A Rose is a Rose, unless it’s a petunia. . .

Today I was trolling Craigslist looking at various ads. I enjoy reading what people say, how they advertise themselves, seeing what works and what doesn’t. I have also found people who have stolen my copy, and images. Imitation is th highest form of flattery, yes?

Today, I found this:

Reply to: serv-9wujx-@……..

I specialize in Film and Music industry clients.

– Phone or email readings (no toll numbers, I call or email you at the number or email address you provide)
– First 15 mins are free (if you are not convinced I can help you, you don’t pay)
– I DO NOT USE TAROT CARDS! I am a spiritual intuitive I work of the vibrations I pick up from you
– I can consult on business, friendship, personal finances, romance or career
– My fees are scaled based on what you do for a living (and I’ll know if you are lying : ) )

Give me a try. You’ll be surprised by what you learn.

While this is interesting, I ask myself, where is the Coaching? What this person is offering is intuitive advice, which is NOT COACHING!

(This is one of my soap box issues, so please, bear with me.)

I don’t mind people offering their guidance, their wisdom, their inner knowing to help others. Hades, a big part of Coaching is definitely transformational and therefore can be perceived as having a spiritual aspect. I am not going to argue this. BUT, as a Coach, if I am following the model approved by the ICF and by the various training groups / schools I have participated in, I don’t tell the client anything! It is for the Client to discover and to drive the session. It is through their agenda that I help to guide them towards their ultimate goal. Coaches do not do “readings,” straight intuitive or with tarot cards.

What I offer as a Coach is this:

I assist the Client to develop an agenda which supports their goals.
I help them to learn to communicate better
I help them to reduce stress
I assist them to shift their focus
I teach them ways to re-language their conversations and communications
I help them to let go of any perceived need for control which in turn allows them to delegate with more confidence and freedom from fear
I support them in exploring, expanding and shifting their world view in order that they may achieve better outcomes
I am willing to be a BS monitor when needed. In a direct but supportive way.

These are the main things I, and other Coaches, offer. Anything else is something else. I am not going to give you an intuitive reading and tell you what the future holds. While I could, the truth is – and any one who is worth their salt as a reader will tell you – that the future is alterable. Not saying that reading cards, palms, tea leafs is not helpful, simply that as a tool for real long term transformation, they are unreliable at best. And there is a certain amount of use of intuition in Coaching (Psychology as well,) but this is an added skill which a good Coach hones, not the main one used.

I wish the intuitive reader above luck. I hope that they are able to make a good living as a reader. But I also would like to see them stop using the word “Coach” as this is not what they do. And I would like to encourage everyone who is thinking of getting a Coach, or becoming one, to look at the skills and knowledge needed for to acheive success – both yours and the Coaches – and ask yourself, does the person offering these services have what I need.

Things to think about.

Until next time.
